Sondre Norheim is widely regarded as the father of modern skiing, but his story goes far deeper than a single title. Born in 1825 in the rugged valley of Morgedal, Norway, Norheim reshaped skiing forever through his innovative techniques and groundbreaking equipment designs. From pioneering the Telemark turn to refining skis for better control, his influence still echoes through every smooth, knee-bent turn we make today. Discover how one skier’s passion and creativity laid the foundation for Telemark, Nordic, and alpine skiing as we know them.

What is Telemark Skiing?
Telemark skiing is a captivating blend of art and athleticism, offering a unique approach to traveling and descending snowy landscapes. It’s the original turn on snow — a Nordic-downhill technique where one makes a turn with two skis mounted with free-heel bindings. It stands out for its grace, technical demands, and a connection to skiing’s historical roots.
The Freeheel Life | Onward
Now that we've sparked some renewed activity online, I wanted to share an update on what's happening in Freeheel Life land. As many of you know from reaching out, I made the decision last spring to close the brick-and-mortar shop in Salt Lake City to focus more on my real estate business, which I started in 2020. I sell homes across Utah and moved a couple of hours from SLC about four years ago, so keeping the physical shop no longer made sense. The dream of running a true Telemark shop—the kind of place I’d want to walk into myself—was fulfilled. I proved many concepts, learned a lot from both successes and setbacks, and have zero regrets. Mission accomplished.
