Powderwhore Interview

Q: Who are the ‘Powderwhores’? (Location, Background, People, etc.)

A: The definition of a Powderwhore is anyone committed to, obsessed by, and or addicted to the act of skiing, preferably powder snow. We are the Wasatch chapter of whores. The core group being myself (Noah Howell), Jonah Howell my brother and long time backcountry partner, Andy Jacobsen friend and pro freeskier, Andy Rosenberg friend and Inspirational leader. Between us we are out skiing and filming 100+ days a season with other friends and athlete’s.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish with the release of this movie?

A: For me it’s an experiment. Make the best movie I can and see what the result is. I want to make the movie that I would want to watch, if others enjoy it that’s great. I think it will create an anticipation and excitement for the winter to come. I hope it motivates and inspires people to get out and enjoy the mountains. Also I hope to sell enough copies to travel, ski, and film next winter.

Q: What is the Title of the film? What can we expect to see?

A: The films title is PW05 (Powderwhore 2005). We wanted to capture the full spectrum of skiing with park footage, cliff drops, big mountain, and deep pow. We have a segment from Baffin Island, Canada with kite and steep chute skiing. “ Master Piste Theatre” with local legend Andrew Mclean will be a fun twist. Todd Stewart makes his film debut after living and skiing out of a yurt for the past 12 winters. All this and more.

Q: We were hearing a lot about you guys throughout the season….The epic POW, The Avalanches, the great trips... tell us a little about the past season.

A: It was a long season with great skiing from early October to mid May. Highest avalanche danger in recorded history kept us on our toes and on lower angle pitches for the first half of the season. The amazing amount of snowfall led to some of the best pow days any of us could remember. Once things stabilized (or slid) we pushed out on the bigger lines. Sam Cox from Montana and Rob Nachtwey from Tahoe made some vistis to SLC and laid down some nice tracks. February rolled around and I found myself laid out with the time honored ski tradition of the torn ACL. A week later Andy Rosenberg used up #4 of his 9 lives in surviving a 1700ft slide down Mt Superior. With two of the driving forces out for a bit we focused on the editing and production of the film. Andy Jacobsen finished out the season strong with a Heli trip in Alaska’s Chugach Range. All in all an eventful year.

Q: Do you have plans to film next year? If so... any ideas where you would like to take the next film?

A: I want to film next year and PWO5 will dictate how much energy to put into it. If this years film is well received and Powderwhore can find a viable way to continue we will. The next film would be Bigger, Deeper, Longer, Further, Steeper, Faster, Cleaner, Spicier, with a love scene or two and some explosions.

Q: When can we expect the film to come out?

A: The film will be released November 1st 2005 with premieres planned for select ski towns. (dates and times to be announced, check www.powderwhore.com.

Q: Where can our readers pick up a copy?

A: DVD copies will be available at the premieres and at www.powderwhore.com.
