New England Telemark (NET) Filmfest 2005

Friday night New England Telemark held their third annual Telemark Movie festival. Let me start be saying the our sport is lucky to have Biff Higgison and Matt DiBenedetto busting their butts on the East Coast to accommodate almost every aspect of Free Heel skiing through the work they do at New England Telemark. Whether it is a film festival, any of the larger winter festivals or the competitions – NET is constantly supporting the full spectrum of the sport throughout New England – PERIOD. This organization is a tribe of un-sung heroes that I hope receives the support they deserve as our sport continues to grow.

Ok on to the film fest- The Kresge Auditorium at Bowdion College ME was filled up tight. It wasn’t the Burlington, Vermont crowd I’m use to at most ski movie events that come to UVM. I didn’t hear a single empty can hit the floor and most of the hoots and hollers for big airs and sick jibs came from me. I think I was even shushed once. That’s only to say this audience was focused on getting their job done - the job of choosing the film that best captured the spirit of telemark skiing for the particular entries. Each film offered something different. The crowed seemed to come alive when humor and fun presented itself in 'Next Season' by Jason Manders and Chris Marr. It was an entertaining poke at how some folks go about getting through down time between seasons. In the end it wasn’t the solo efforts of Randy Baker or the New England powder skiing of Evan Waldman that the crowd thought best embodied the spirit of telemark skiing for the individual filmmakers, but the humor of the boys from the mid-west. If your thinking of entering the contest next year think creative, think unique, think individual interpretation and remember the crowd is looking for an artistic and entertaining expression of your view on the sport. Check the NET site periodically for a posting of the films or for other information on New England events this season.
