January 23, 2006

  • Hola everyone! There lots of exciting news this week as we head into the last week of January 2006 and the end of the first month of this year. FHL is bringing you the fresh of the fresh so you can stay hip on what’s going on in the freeheel scene.
    Thanks! – The FHL Crew
  • The US Freeskiing Open took place this past week in Vail, Colorado. Freeheelers Jack Tolan and Josh Madsen were the only freeheel participants to enter the event this season. Tolan had some smooth Cork 7s and a mean switch 7 mute but was unable to make it into the semi finals. Mr. Madsen had a bit of trouble putting a run together and unfortunately ended up at the end of his second run with a tweaked knee. Doesn’t appear to be anything too serious and he should be back up and running soon.
  • Karhu’s 7tm Power Binding Selected as Official Binding by US Telemark Team : With the need to have a releasable binding worthy of FIS standards and also a reliable binding for racing and training, the US Telemark team has officially named the 7tm Power as their official binding. General Manager, Charles Lozner, talks about Karhu’s stance on the imperative need for releasable bindings. “Modern day Telemark equipment has changed dramatically to larger, more powerful gear. Skiers that rely on their bindings to fail, in order for them to release, are putting their safety in jeopardy. Especially while skiing in avalanche terrain; it just doesn’t make sense to ski in a non-releasable binding.” The 7tm Power is also a binding used by Telemark Freeskier and Karhu Team rider Jason West, who likes to go big and swears by it as the best binding out there.
  • Vail Mountain School has a 16 member Telemark Ski Team. They ski every school day with their principal and founder of the team Mike Ioli, who has built this program over the last few years. He told FHL that more and more kids are joining every year and he is excited with the growth. We hope that all of the Vail Mountain School kids become regulars on our site!
  • Park City Telemark has announced TELEMARK TUESDAYS an event that will take place every Tuesday night at Park City Mountain Resort from 5 to 7pm under the lights of the Payday lift. Workshops are offered to anyone from the ‘never ever’ Telemark skier through the advanced. For more information contact:

  • We are pleased to announce some new FHL pro team members this week. FHL is supporting the athletes that are really representing what is going on in the freeheel world. It is also an exciting time as we are expanding our team on an international level. These are our new athletes:
    • Joonas Karhumaa – Our first international Team member hailing from Finland. He is throwing down hard over there and we are really excited to have him as our representative there in Europe!
    • Dylan Crossman – 3 time Telemark Freeride Champion hops on board the Team bringing some serious big mountain skiing to our ever expanding pro team. Stoked to have you on Dylan!
    • Jack Tolan – a young talent out of Colorado. Jack just finished competing in the US Open where he killed it with a couple of solid runs. He is another CRMS kid that has dominated in competitions over the years and has overcome an injury last season to come back stronger than ever.
    • Eron Turnipseed – Straight nappy gangsta from Vail, Colorado. A ripping all around skier that you have seen in past tough guy production movies and in Telemark Skier magazine.
    • Mark Tziesen – Summit County, CO shredmeister, Mark is another great all around skier that has been on the scene for a while now.
Welcome Aboard everyone! The FHL family is growing stronger by the day. Stay tuned for updates and bios on our Pro Team every month, as they travel the globe slaying the deep pow, winning competitions and pushing the limits of what can be done on freeheel equipment.
