Sleepthief & Jody Quine - The Dawnseeker

Sleepthief (a.k.a. Justin Elswick) creates music that tends to deviate away from anything anyone has ever heard. "The Dawnseeker," released June 27, is truly an innovative album. Although Elswick originally planned to use only one vocalist for the entire CD, he ended up creating an ideal list of talented female vocalists and friends who, in turn, collaborated with Elswick and his Sleepthief project. The outcome: 13 fantasy-like songs that each have their own individual sound and virtuosity to them brought by the vocalists.

Justin Elswick is not a person one would normally see so involved in the musical world. He is sort of like a modern day Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, working as a full-time attorney and also as an imaginative mind creating intense, visionary music under the name Sleepthief. All of his hard work has paid off, as "The Dawnseeker" has been hailed by press as "one of the most highly anticipated releases in the world of electronica."

All of the songs on this album are especially distinctive from one another. While "Eurydice" has Celtic roots, "Desire of Ages" has a more Middle Eastern air to it and further on in the album, the song "Afterthoughts" possesses a classic Icelandic ambience. "The Dawnseeker" ends with "Entre Ciel Et Mier," which means "between sky and sea" in French. The peaceful tune that is sung completely in French is just the right ending for this chimerical CD.

Band: Tiger Baby
Album: Noise around Me

Tiger Baby's "Noise around Me" is more true to electronica roots. Throughout the album, the music is more dancey and less smooth, save for the breathy vocals of singer Pernille Pang. This album is different from their first record "Lost in you" in that it is darker and definitely more synthesized and distorted.

Differentiating between Tiger Baby's songs is a pretty demanding task, but "Noise around Me" will still be enjoyable to electronica fans. All of the songs begin very dance-like and excited. It is only when Pang's voice sets in that the music starts to take on a more transcendental stage.

"Noise around Me" has eleven graceful yet feverish songs, including a cover song "Love Will Tear Us Apart" originally by Joy Division, which are sure to impress and shock the electronica world.
