PW06 Premiere
Contributed by Joe Penacoli

Picking right up where they left off last season, the Powderwhores crew comes back strong this season with another stellar tele film of epicleptic proportions – proving that the sequel concept does work. All of the main players were in the house at the Salt Lake City premier of PW06: Cannon, Jacobsen, Madsen, Nachtwey, Stratton, and the Howell brothers to name a few. As expected, the show sold out and we were wrestling for seats in the theater.

Perhaps what sets the Powderwhores apart from their alpine counterparts who are skiing similar terrain is that the PW crew packs their bones to the top of nearly every face they shred, cliff they drop, and chute they rip; a truly organic approach to backcountry lines that would otherwise be accessed by high-lines on sleds or laps via helicopter.

Keeping in tune with the spirit of the Wasatch, Bob Athey, affectionately nicknamed WOW (Wizard of the Wasatch), made a special appearance half way through the film. Athey, a legend in his own right among the freeheel crowd, showed us all that it makes more sense to measure net worth not by how much money we have in the bank, but by how many days we’re out on the snow. PW06 delivered this message to us on film as we all watched Athey lay illustrious S-turns in un-tracked pow fields over, and over, and over.....and over again.

Stealing our award for the most exciting section in the film, Charlie Cannon, gets down deep in the Wasatch pow and shows us what boosting big air is all about – having fun and getting loose. Cannon’s unique and charismatic style on the hill only add to the entertainment of watching this freeheeler huck his bones left and right, and then left again, all the while not letting us forget why we freeheel – because the turn feels and looks so good.

Just when you thought everything has been covered, the ‘Whores give us a peek into the other side of the freeheel spectrum with Josh Madsen and what he’s throwing down in the park these days. We don’t want to spoil any of the flare that Madsen displays with his freeheels other than this guy brings a whole new definition to the word ‘levitate.’ Undoubtedly, after seeing Madsen’s section, freeheelers worldwide are going to want to get out and dominate every rail, box, and jump they can step up to. Madsen also draws viewers back to the heart of freeheel skiing with a sequence of backcountry shots showcasing his angles of attack on killer big mountain lines as well.

So, if you’ve ever been sitting there pondering about what it would look like if God skied, PW06 will answer this question for you, and more. We’re excited to see what these guys put together for our viewing pleasure next fall. Onward and upward in the world of freeheel movie production!
